If you moved to Howard County this summer, the next two weeks are going to move quickly. Howard County Public Schools opens for K-12 students on Monday, August 24, 2026, with pre-kindergarten and RECC students starting Thursday, August 27. That’s less than two weeks away, and families who closed on a house in June or July are often surprised by how much needs to happen before that first bell.
I’ve walked a lot of clients through this transition. Here’s what actually matters, in the order it matters.
Start with Registration, Not the School Supply List
New residents can’t simply show up on the first day. HCPSS requires registration before a student can attend, and the process asks for documentation that takes time to gather if you don’t already have it in a folder somewhere.
You’ll generally need proof of residency in Howard County, your child’s birth certificate or equivalent age documentation, immunization records that meet Maryland requirements, and previous school records if your student is transferring mid-education. Families who rent rather than own may need additional documentation of tenancy.
The immunization piece catches people most often. Maryland’s requirements don’t always match the state you came from, and if your child is missing something, you’re now trying to get a pediatrician appointment during the busiest two weeks of the year. If you haven’t checked this yet, check it today.
Know Your Attendance Zone — Actually Know It
Your assigned school is determined by your home address, not by which school is closest or which one you’d prefer. HCPSS maintains a school locator tool that lets you enter an address and see the assigned elementary, middle, and high school.
I want to be direct about something here, because it comes up constantly: do not rely on what a listing said, what a neighbor told you, or what a third-party real estate site displayed. Those sources are frequently out of date. Attendance zones change, and school assignment data on national portals is notoriously unreliable in Howard County specifically because our boundaries have been adjusted multiple times in recent years.
Verify through HCPSS directly. If you’re still house hunting, verify before you write an offer — not after.
Sort Out Transportation Early
Bus eligibility depends on distance from your home to your assigned school, and route information is published shortly before the school year begins. If your student is walk-eligible rather than bus-eligible, that’s worth knowing now rather than at 7:15 on a Monday morning.
For families in newer developments or on roads without sidewalks, it’s also worth understanding where the designated stop is and what the walking route looks like. Some Howard County neighborhoods have excellent pedestrian infrastructure. Others were built before that was a priority.
Mark These Dates Now
A few calendar items worth putting in your phone before the year gets away from you. Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, with schools and offices closed. There’s a three-hour early dismissal on September 30. Thanksgiving break runs November 26 and 27. Winter break begins December 24 and continues through January 1, 2027.
Two dates catch working parents off guard every year: October 16 and October 28, 2026, are staff professional days with schools closed for students. Both fall on ordinary weekdays. If you need childcare coverage, arranging it in August is considerably easier than arranging it in October.
One notable change for this year — the Board of Education approved calendar adjustments in June that removed mid-term exams for middle and high school students, converting two previously scheduled January early dismissals into full days.
The last scheduled day is June 8, 2027, though inclement weather makeup days are built in through mid-June, so don’t book a non-refundable trip for the second week of June.
A Word About the Adjustment Period
The logistics are the easy part. What families tell me is harder is the social transition, particularly for middle and high school students who left established friend groups behind.
Howard County has a genuine advantage here: because so many families relocate for federal work, military assignments, and contractor positions, our schools are unusually experienced at absorbing new students mid-stream. Your child will not be the only new kid. School counselors here are used to this, and most schools have peer connection programs specifically designed for it. Reach out to the counselor before the first day rather than waiting to see how it goes.
Getting your student into one activity — a fall sport, a club, marching band — during the first few weeks does more for the adjustment than almost anything else. Fall sports tryouts happen right around the start of school, so this window is now.
If You’re Still Looking
If you’re reading this because you’re relocating to the area and haven’t found a home yet, the school year starting doesn’t mean you’ve missed your window. Families move to Howard County year-round, and there are real advantages to buying in the fall when competition thins out.
What I would say is this: let the attendance zone drive the search rather than treating it as a detail to confirm later. It’s far easier to identify the schools you want and search within those boundaries than to fall in love with a house and then discover it feeds somewhere you didn’t expect.
If you’d like help mapping neighborhoods to specific schools, or you want to understand how a particular address is zoned, I’m happy to walk through it. Knowing the boundaries block by block is part of the job.
